Charms of Chile
By J. Herbert Silverman

Chile is a unique
country extending more than 2,000 miles from north to south, where you can sail
with a catamaran, touch a glacier, see a penguin bathe in thermal hot springs or
simply look up into the night sky and see the Southern Cross.
Gateway to the
Maule Valley that bears a resemblance to the Extramadura region of Western
Spain is the charming conquistador town of Talca. A two hour drive from Santiago, this venerable city has
excellent small hotels such as the quaint but modern Marcos Camero
furnished with colonial antiques. It's a short walk from the Town Square -
a mint example of the Spanish genre.
Specials Interests
Ecotravel is a
growing industry in Chile. The National Wildlife Preserve System is among
the world's best.
Senior citixens, anxious for an adventurous but healthy
vacation, can visit one
of the 33 health resorts and
spas including El Corazon and Colina near Santiago.
Transportation
Comfortable modern buses serve all
major cities with three classes. For a thrill unmatched even in Rome, try a car
trip through the streets of Santiago. But a great way to get around the
capital, however, is by an expanding subway system.
Must-See Attractions
One great attraction is La Recova
Municipal market with its handicrafts such as lapis lazuli jewelry, alpaca wool
knits and ceramics. The Mineralogical Museum is a reminder of the copper mining
boom of the 19th century which had a sharp impact on Santiago's development. At
the Palacio de la Mondea, seat for the presidency, the traditional change of the
guard takes place daily. Contact your travel agent for more information on
